The 5 men that were found dead in the basement of a house that had caught on fire, last January in Novi, Michigan. Were all found to be Illegal Immigrants.
The owner of the House where these men were staying at, while also working at his restaurant has been charged with “harboring undocumented immigrants” his wife has also been charged.
“Authorities allege Roger Tam, 55, and his wife Ada Lei, 48, hired the five people, who are of Mexican nationality, to work at Kim’s Garden. They were all provided housing in the Novi,Michigan home, which is owned by Tam and Lei, and were transported to and from the restaurant as a condition of their employment”.
It was said that all Financial and Employment records at “Kim’s Garden” the restaurant that they own, showed “no indication” that the five men who are now dead, were Legally employed at their restaurant.
United States Attorney General Barbaba McQuade said:
“This case is a sobering reminder of the dangers employers create when they harbor undocumented immigrants. In order to obtain a competitive advantage by paying lower wages and evading taxes, some employers will subject undocumented workers to poor living conditions and even dangerous situations.”
“Department of Homeland Security databases revealed that all five men were illegally in the country and had entered in the last six months.”
Tam and Lei are facing up to 10 years in prison along with a $250,000 fine.
